Grayscale Converter Features

A fast, free grayscale conversion tool with everything you need

Luminance-Weighted

Uses the ITU-R BT.709 standard for perceptually accurate grayscale. Green gets the most weight, matching how humans see brightness.

Natural Results

Produces natural-looking black-and-white images that preserve the perceived brightness and contrast of the original photo.

Real-Time Preview

See the grayscale result instantly as soon as you upload your image. No waiting or separate processing step needed.

Multiple Output Formats

Save your grayscale image as PNG for lossless quality, JPG for smaller files, or WebP for the best compression ratio.

100% Browser-Based

All processing happens locally in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server, ensuring complete privacy.

No Signup Required

Grayscale Converter FAQ

Common questions about converting images to grayscale

How does the grayscale conversion work?

The tool uses luminance-weighted desaturation (ITU-R BT.709 standard) to convert each pixel to grayscale. It calculates brightness as 0.2126×Red + 0.7152×Green + 0.0722×Blue, producing natural-looking results that match how humans perceive brightness.

Is this the same as just removing saturation?

It is similar but more accurate. Simple average grayscale (R+G+B)/3 treats all colors equally, which can look unnatural. Our luminance-weighted method gives more weight to green (which humans are most sensitive to) and less to blue, producing more natural-looking black-and-white images.

Does converting to grayscale reduce image quality?

The conversion itself is mathematically precise. If you save as PNG, quality is fully preserved. JPG and WebP apply compression, but you can control the quality slider to balance file size and quality.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens directly in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images stay on your device and are never sent to any server.

What image formats are supported?

You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, and other common image formats. For output, you can choose between PNG (lossless), JPG (smaller file size), or WebP (best compression).

Can I convert images to grayscale on my phone?

Yes, this tool works in any modern mobile browser. Simply upload your photo, preview the grayscale result, and download.
